Labor exec encourages Pinoys to work here than abroad By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
DESPITE a more promising future when one goes overseas, Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) Regional Director Maria Gloria A. Tango said she would still encourage Filipinos to find work in the country and stay with their families.
Every year, thousands of Filipinos go abroad to find jobs and have better and brighter future since job generation in the country is not enough for all Filipinos.
"Although, ingun nato, dako ug katabang ang Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) remittances, pero ang social cost taas pud kaayo," Tango said during an interview Thursday.
According to her, when one of the spouse leaves the family to work abroad, relationship between the couple and children are strained.
"Unta kung diri lang sa Pilipinas, mamonitor ug maayo ang relasyon tali sa pamilya and masunod jud nimo ang development sa imong anak, lahi naman gud kung isa nalang sa couple ang mahabilin dinhi," she said.
Tango said that if the need to work abroad cannot be prevented by either of the couple to help them in their finances, working overseas should only be for a limited number of years.
"Siyempre you leave and work sa gawas to give your children good future pero unsa naman ang future if pagbalik nimo nabungkag na ang mga bata due to the negative influences sa gawas that could have been prevented kung naa pa sila diri," said Tango
As of the moment, she said, overseas employment is considered the temporary measure to address excess of labor supply in the country.
Meanwhile, the main development strategy of the country is the absorption and placement of the people that is not enough to address unemployment in the country.
She said that the country is taking advantage of the demand of Filipino workers abroad like in the field of health, construction, and seafaring.
"Daghan ang mga countries karon that prefers Filipino workers because of our attitude towards work na maayo and industrious ang mga Filipinos," she said.
The Dole has been conducting jobs fair to facilitate job generation in the country.
For October 2005, Dole has conducted 30 jobs fair in the region and has helped employed more than 2,000 Dabawenyos.
