Rebel extortion in Diwalwal slows down, Army officer
AMID the hard times engulfing Mt. Diwalwal, revolutionary tax collection has reportedly slowed down.
Lieutenant Colonel Hernando Caraig Jr., chief of the Army's 28th Infantry Battalion based in Mt. Diwalwal said they have received reports that rebels have not been regularly collecting revolutionary taxes.
"Di na daw masyadong nangongolekta," Caraig said during press conference Friday attended by representatives from the Project Monitoring and Coordinating Center of the National Task Force Diwalwal.
Caraig said he still has to continue looking into the NPA activities in the area to verify the reports he received.
"We still have to find out if they continue asking taxes from the people in the area," Caraig said.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo earlier ordered the military to identify and arrest revolutionary tax collectors in Diwalwal.
Arroyo presided over the recent Regional Disaster and Coordinating Council in Davao City to look into the cave-in and explosion incident inside the JB Mining and Management Corporation (JBMMC) that operated Sunshine Tunnel at Mt. Diwata, Monkayo, Compostela Valley on October 26, which killed 32 miners.
Though a number of miners have been displaced and out of job, JBMMC is paying them their salaries until the end of the year including the victims.
However, all other small-scale mining operators have been allowed to continue their operation.
