Davao's Perez, Domenios plunge into action Sunday By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
MANILA -- It's the moment of truth. Sydney Olympians Shiela Mae Perez and Zardo Domenios of Davao City will start the country's 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medal hunt in diving over at the Trace Aquatics Center in Los Baños Laguna today.
Perez, who hails from Sasa, will combine forces with Domenios' younger sister Ceseil in a bid to up their synchronized three-meter springboard bronze finish in the Vietnam SEA Games in 2003.
Zardo, on his part, will try to make a mark in the one-meter springboard individual event, a new entry in the roster of diving events, along with Fil-Am Victor Paguia Jr.
Team manager Deedee Gonzalez, president of the Davao City Swimming Association (DCSA), Friday said: "Our divers are ready for the events.
The one-meter springboard might be new to them but they have gotten themselves oriented with it while training in China and in a competition there."
She said Paguia's entry to the national team is a welcome development, adding: "It is his first time to join the RP diving team but he's already skilled in his event. He also joined the training in China."
The DCSA chief said the nine-member diving team is set to do battle in the four-day divefest.
"The team is in good shape. They are all prepared. They've also been accustomed to the playing venue since they arrived here in Laguna last November 19 while the other delegations arrived later in the 23rd so they have the edge," she said in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao.
Morena charmer Perez will also redeem her silver output in Vietnam in the women's three-meter springboard on Monday as teammate Andrea Marie Rafanan of Cebu City will also make her debut in the event.
Perez, in recent interviews, said in the vernacular: "Pilipinas na ang host, dili na ko madaya sa akong gold (I hope I won't be cheated of my gold now since our country is now hosting the Games)."
Dabawenyos Domenios and Niño Carog will also compete in men's three-meter synchronized event while Vietnam twin gold medalist Ryan Rexel Fabriga will defend his 10-meter platform title.
Rafanan will also see action in the women's 10-meter platform. (MLSA)
