Amit preserves RP supremacy in pool By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
Pagulayan fails in bid for a fourth gold medal
MANILA -- Defending champion Philippines failed to retain the men's 9-ball crown it held for the past three Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
But Rubilen Amit pocketed the gold in the women's event, thus preserving the Filipinos' over-all supremacy at the pool table in the Games.
Amit, who earlier annexed the women's 8-ball singles gold, shut out Malaysian bet Suhana Dewi bin Sabtu 11-0 in the finals. Singaporean Hoe Shu Wah settled for the bronze.
Alex "The Lion" Pagulayan, the last man standing for the RP men's billiards team, bowed to Vietnamese Luong Chi Dung 9-11 in the quarter-finals, spoiling his bid for a fourth gold medal in his SEA Games debut at the Makati Coliseum Sunday.
The gold went to Singaporean Chan Keng Kwang who routed Chi Dung 11-5 in their championship match. The latter settled for silver while Malaysian Ooi Fuk Yuen bagged the bronze.
Davao City's Lee Vann Corteza won the 9-ball title in the 1999 Brunei Darussalam Games then retained it in the 2001 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia edition of the Games.
In the 2003 Games held in Vietnam, Cebuano Warren Kiamco retook the title for the Philippines.
Pagulayan, however, had done his share to lift the RP billiards and snookers team to a successful stint by anchoring the gold win of the snooker team and 9-ball doubles team then copping the men's 8-ball pool singles gold at the expense of defending champion Corteza.
