Dabawenyo athletes contribute 9 golds, 4 silvers, 3 bronze By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
MANILA -- Davao athletes hauled a total of nine gold medals, four silvers and three bronzes to help lift the Philippines' over-all championship in the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games that came to a close in a colorful rites at the jampacked Quirino Grandstand here Monday.
Leading the pack is new darling of RP sports--Shiela Mae Perez, who won two individual golds and one doubles gold in diving followed by cue artist Lee Vann Corteza and diver Ryan Fabriga who each got one doubles gold and one individual silver.
Perez shared a gold with Ceseil Domenios in women's three-meter springboard synchronized event then swept the three-meter springboard and one-meter springboard individual golds.
Corteza teamed up with Antonio Gabica, whose wife is a Dabawenya from Toril, for the men's 8-ball doubles gold and then pocketed the silver in 8-ball singles.
Fabriga combined forces with Cebuano Kelvin Kong to defend his men's 10-meter platform synchronized diving gold. He then settled for silver in the individual event.
Divers Zardo Domenios and Niño Carog also won a gold in men's three-meter springboard synchronized event.
Zardo took bronzes in men's three-meter and one-meter springboard individual categories.
Woodpusher Oliver Dimakiling took one individual silver in men's blitz chess while Jesus Asok and Ramil Domenios helped the nationals win two team golds in 10-A-Side and 20-A-Side 500-meter dragon boat races.
Former University of Mindanao batters Edmer del Socorro and Ruel Batuto were instrumental in the Philippines' gold finish in men's baseball as brothers Frazier, Ali and Norton Alamara were in the silver medallist RP water polo team.
Team Philippines soared to its first SEA Games title with a total of 114 golds, 76 silvers and 85 bronzes as of press time, surpassing the medal output when the country last hosted the Games in 1991.
