Trade optimistic on meeting export, job generation targets

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the Davao Region is optimistic to meet its target this year with an improved performance from various industries.

DTI Regional Director Merly Cruz said they could achieve their targets in exports and job generation.

Cruz said the export is stable because the products that the region produced are resource-based and the institutional market is also stable.

As far as job generation is concerned, Cruz said, it is also picking up because the small entrepreneurs that employ the workers are doing great.

However, she said more efforts have to be done on investment promotion.

She said Davao City for instance should take advantage of its stable peace and order condition because this is its strength.

"There is big opportunity for ICT and many investors from other country are looking at the region for expansion," she said.

But Cruz said that Davao should also make sure that investors are fully serviced so they could bring in their colleagues because of the good experience that they had in the region.

"We have the advantage because it is a lot more expensive to operate for offshore business in Japan than in the Philippines," she said.

"There are already investments of this sort but most are concentrated in Luzon and the Visayas," she added.

Cruz said investors always look at environmental condition because it is there and even quoted a saying, "strike while the iron is hot."

Citing its performance for the third quarter this year, Cruz said, all indicators are improving except on investments.

She said that for this year alone, three foreign direct investments were enrolled but terrorism hampered their coming in.

But in the overall performance of the third quarter in 2005 compared to the same period last year, there is a marked improvement.

She said they noted a growth of between nine to 10 percent for this year as against 2004.

Cruz said jobs are better and higher by 15 percent as compared to the same period last year.
