Traffic group confident it can handle holiday traffic
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

TRAFFIC Management Center (TMC) Chief Celso T. Gempesaw said Monday he is confident they could manage and control traffic flow during the Christmas season.

Gempesaw said that there is an increase of 35 percent of vehicles since neighboring provinces and cities come to Davao City every Christmas season so major roads are usually congested.

"We are confident and we can also assure the public because we feel that we are really capable of doing our job," Gemepesaw said during an interview.

TMC has already identified areas in the city that become congested during the season.

These are the Chinatown, Bangkerohan, and Agdao public markets including the shopping malls.

"These are what we call the people generators. Now if people converge in one place, it means traffic is also heavy," Gempesaw said.

He said that almost 70 traffic personnel originally assigned in different schools and in regularly congested areas during the weekdays would be reassigned to the areas where traffic congestion is expected during the season.

"There are already traffic aides assigned to these places. We are just putting in additional men," Gempesaw added.

However, he said that no matter how prepared TMC, they could never ensure 100 percent smooth traffic flow since traffic situations cannot be fully controlled.

"There are instances where a vehicle conks out right in the middle of the road or when vehicles collide in heavy traffic and these vehicles are not immediately pulled out," Gempesaw said.

But still, he said, they have the towing vehicle to help them out.
