Three artists and a guest at Gallery J

THREE Davao artists with very different personalities but with one thing in common--they are all inexhaustible painters--heeded a call for an art adventure one summer in 2002 and headed for the hills in Salaysay, Lomondao, Calinan.

What they experienced there was a pure, all-sensory creative boos and a re-discovery of limitless drawing possibilities. From then on, the trips to the great outdoors have become an annual outing for these artists. And to ensure the continuity of this new tradition, the decided to formalize their group and christened themselves the Trihil Art Club.

The name Trihil comes from the three hills that the artists frequent in Salaysay. It also represents the three personalities in the group--Lito Pepito, Roger Paconla and Jurie Jaime.

These three are familiar names in the art circle. Lito Pepito, for instance, is not only well respected for his contemporary and sometimes cutting-edge art but is looked up to by most up-and-coming artists as their mentor and father figure.

Roger Paconla, on the other hand, is without a doubt the most productive artist in Davao. Due to his vast output at any given time, he is able to participate in simultaneous exhibits giving him the advantage of visibility. The third and youngest member, Jurie, is already an artist to reckon with. His realistic style of painting makes his works highly appealing to a broader market.

Along with the yearly treks to the boondocks are the annual art shows, which the group holds at the end of every year. This year's show opened on December 9 at Gallery J, NCCC Mall Matina.

Aside from the three members of the Trihil Art Club, an invited guest artist, a rose among the thorns, by the name of Ging Lopez-Balinas has joined the group show. Ging recently returned to Davao and to painting after a hiatus of about five years or so. Those who have missed her works will be glad to know that she's back into action in the art scene. And those unfamiliar with her works will be pleased with her dainty style and her choice of feminine themes for her paintings.

The exhibit mounted at Gallery J, located at the 2nd floor of NCCC Mall Matina, will run until December 31. Showcasing an eclectic collection of the recent works of the four artists, art lovers and art collectors will be happy to find an array of styles and subject matter at the show.

Three artists, three different personas, one common goal: to paint and paint and paint. This is what makes up the Trihil Art Club. For further details about the group and their exhibit, you may call Gallery J at 299-3041.
