Rebel attack worries Tagum biz sector
TAGUM CITY -- The latest killing of four soldier in a public market here sent jitters to the business sector, but Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy brushed this aside saying "there's nothing to worry about."
In a phone interview, Uy said the incident on Tuesday was an isolated case that could also happen anywhere in the world.
Four soldiers, including an Army officer of the 404th Infantry Brigade based in Maco, Compostela Valley, were shot by suspected NPA members inside the Tagum City public market Tuesday. The wife of one of the slain soldier was also wounded.
The victims together with members of their families were in Tagum to do Christmas shopping. Report said that six suspects suddenly emerged and shot the victims when they were about to board their service van.
Uy viewed the incident as a "military conflict" with the New People's Army and that the business sector should not get apprehensive about.
"They have nothing to be afraid of. I myself is roaming around the city," he said.
Business people would have a reason to get upset if the armed rebels get in their way taking hold of their business ventures and grabbing their properties, Uy said.
"Angay lang sila mahadlok kung moingon ng NPA--ako na ng imong negosyo--amo na ning hospital," he said.
In a separate interview, Tagum City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. president Lemuel Purador admitted feeling scared about what had happened.
"I am personally quite apprehensive. What wold be next in line? What is the next plan of the leftist? What are they trying to prove? Are they here to sow acts of terrorism?" he said.
He called on the national and local governments to find ways to solve such problem through holding series of dialogues.
"Otherwise if this problem goes on, the business sector will be affected," he said.
Uy urged the military to take extra precautionary measures anywhere they go. (PIA/JMDAbangan)
