Davao Oriental employees rue 'bonusless' Christmas By Ben O. Tesiorna
THOUSANDS of employees from Davao Oriental province intend to seek the help of Representative Mayo Almario to intercede in their behalf for the Provincial Government to give them a Christmas bonus this year.
From all indications, this Christmas season too would pass without any bonus.
Employees who requested anonymity said this is the second year that they have not received any Christmas bonus under the administration of Governor Ma. Elena Palma Gil.
The employees claimed despite the fact that the province has enough savings from their budget for 2005 they still did not get any bonus.
"That's why we are wondering why the province cannot afford to give a bonus to its employees," an employee said.
Another government employee who worked for almost three decades now said this is the "worst" Christmas they have experienced so far.
The employee said considering the economic crisis and the series of price hikes they are pinning their hopes to have food on their tables this holiday season on the Christmas bonus that the government could give them.
"Some workers have used up all their wages and will not be receiving anything for Christmas and the New Year," the employee said.
The employees never received even the promised Valentine's Day bonus by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
"We also do not expect to receive this P5,000 the President promised to be given government employees," an employee said.
Sun.Star Davao tried to get the reaction of the Provincial Government through provincial information officer Neilwin Bravo but to no avail.
In Maasin City, Southern Leyte, 500 city employees received a pleasant surprise during their Christmas party last December 22--an incentive bonus of P10,000.
Maasin Mayor Damian Mercado and the council members called the employees individually to the stage and handed envelopes each containing P10,000 in crisp one thousand peso bills.
Here in Davao City, the city employees received P5,000 bonus for regulars and P2,000 for the contractuals plus P1,000 worth of gift certificates.
This is one scenario employees from Davao Oriental could only wish for in their dreams.
