Livelihood programs top priority of SK in 2006

LIVELIHOOD and entrepreneurship programs will start off the New Year for Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federation, said SK Federation President and City Councilor April Marie Dayap Tuesday.

The federation in their strategic planning Friday came up with four major programs to be distributed every quarter.

"We have identified the things and aspects needed by the youth and we noted that there are now many youths who are not in school, so we have to make sure that livelihood programs are provided for them," said Dayap.

According to Dayap the out of school youths would be able to help themselves through the livelihood programs.

Specific activities under the first major program include a job fair and livelihood expo and providing of a Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda)-SK vocational scholarship program.

Other three major programs are the capability building and sports development, health and sanitation and anti-drug campaign, and environmental awareness and protection.

"The intention of the capability-building and sports development is to empower the youth and develop their leadership skills," Dayap said.

She added that being the chair of the City Council committee on youth and sports, it is also proper to look into the sports activities as it provide not only physical fitness but as well as mental and emotional fitness.

The third major campaign, which is the health and sanitation and anti-drug campaign, would focus on giving moral values for the youth sector for them to avoid taking prohibited drugs.

"This is not just about the numbers who are or are not into drugs, there are the moral values to impart," Dayap said.

For the last quarter of the year, SK will focus on youth environmental awareness and protection.

Dayap said that they would continue for next year, their green brigade campaign that is giving seminars to the SK leaders of the barangays for them to be informed on how to protect the environment. (BRQ)
