MILF spokesman chides Southcom chief: Read before you rant

MORO Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) spokesman Eid Kabalu advised Southcom chief Lieutenant General Edilberto Adan to read first their ceasefire agreement with the government before making any accusations against them before the media.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Kabalu said Adan's statement accusing MILF of violation of the peace process for allegedly recruiting new members clearly shows that he is not aware of the ceasefire agreement.

"Yung issue niya (recruitment) is actually not included in the ceasefire agreement. Nonetheless, di kami nagre-recruit and nagti-train. Di na namin kailangang magdagdag," Kabalu said.

He admitted though that the MILF is undergoing "retraining" of their existing forces.

Kabalu added that they are also undertaking educational campaign among various Muslim communities in Mindanao regarding the peace process.

He said Adan could have mistaken the educational campaign as recruitment.

But Kabalu stressed that their information campaign is not recruitment and instead focused on educating Muslim community on the intricacies of the peace process.

Kabalu then challenged Adan "to be true to his word" that he is supporting the peace process.

"Magbasa sana siya para di siya salungat sa peace process agreement. At sana sa proper forum siya mag-file ng protest and not sa media," Kabalu said.

Adan said former MILF trainees and local officials were among those who testified to the MILF's recruitment activities.

He said at least 80 training activities were reported in Zamboanga Sibugay, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Cotabato, and Tawi-Tawi.

Adan warned that training activities violate the MILF's cease-fire agreement with the military.

Peace talks between government and the MILF are scheduled to resume next year. (BOT)
