Encila: Stellar resolution
By Robert Encila
Musings

TUCSON, Arizona -- I've never subscribed to the universal practice of launching a New Year's resolution, proudly unmoved in my stance to decide my own timing for making imperative life decisions. Naive promises are bred on crude emotions. The fact that most resolutions are easily broken long before the year wraps up summons my perverse amusement.

It's downright presumptuous to expect an old addiction to conform to a superficial timetable. Those of us afflicted with insidious habits--and hardened from life's constant indifference--can gain immeasurable insights by simply admitting our demon's impressive clout. And then it takes a lot more than calendar work.

To steal a charming quip, denial is not just another river in Egypt.

You might deem this cynic equally absurd, though, for despite all the historical debunking of astrology I'm forever drawn to this refined art form as a source of insight for choosing my actions.

For the record, I don't mean the horoscope reading that dominates popular publications and continues to give the ancient form a bad name. For my money's worth, I defer to the sagely analysis of seers whose version of timing reflects the distinctive "inner sky" specific to every individual.

There, my secret is out: I follow the movement of planets to discern my next step. I value the good word of my divinely inspired astrologer before I lend credence to the tired sermon of the fundamentalist bearer of good news. Those who are so inclined to take the literalist ground may now feel justified in seeing me off to hell.

I happen to believe the Deity communicates in riddles, much like the celebrated son of man spoke in parables. It's a clever device aimed at those with ears to hear and perceptions ripe for remembering.

Astrology is the exquisite language that quenches my thirst for comprehending the complex infrastructure of human consciousness. It's an extraordinary roadmap filled with traffic signs. Navigating my life without it is akin to sailing in deep waters with nary a compass.

The three wise men (astrologers?) followed the movement of a great star. Indeed, it's not at all difficult to jump on the bandwagon once you've made the connection. I had to study my own natal chart to understand that astrology was never the enemy it was advertised in my earlier conservative orientation.

And because attunement to current planetary cycles works so well in my life, I'm forced to question the depth of thinking employed by critics who refute its validity.

Scientifically it's not supposed to work. But science never could measure true love, either. Some things in life defy common reasoning. Times like these I can only look to certain results, such as my own success in various professional ventures as a by-product of my reliance on the beneficent timing of Jupiter or an inspired Uranus transit.

Conversely, I'd readily attribute my current financial setbacks with a certain mortgage company to my lack of attention to a fundamental detail of the contract I signed, which I did during a void moon and while mercury was in retrograde.

I don't know why or how this stuff works, but it does. I'd like to think I'm sensible enough to consider the connections as pure coincidence, but it happens with so much frequency it's hard to ignore. Besides, seeing it work in so many other practitioners has sold me on it for life.

I'll spare you the technical details of how specific zodiacal trends continue to influence my life patterns. I would, however, encourage any open-minded seeker to consider experiential astrology as an alternative path to spiritual understanding.

For now, I'm moved to announce that after over a decade in hiatus, I have a serious intention to perform on the big stage and promote an album during the next few months based on some very auspicious heavenly assistance.
