By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

THE Davao City sepak takraw team defended its title over perennial rival Davao del Norte in Saturday's finals of the ongoing Southern Mindanao (SM) Prisaa Meet at the University of Mindanao (UM) Matina courts.

The Davao City selection beat the Tagum City players-bannered Davao del Norte team, 2-0.

Davao City, coached by Salvador Sudosta, relied on UM mainstays Errol Valencia, Alex Barrios and Arnel Betonio to pull off a 21-12, 21-14 victory in the first regu.

In the second regu, Davao City's Grendel Ilogon, Ian Torres and Cleven Mercado doubled the feat with a 21-12, 21-17 win.

Davao City's third regu team of UM's Mark Ong along with DMMA's Erobert Miasis and Judel Jansol were not able to see action as the first two teams have already swept the championship.

Tournament director Nilda Sebellino, in an interview with Sun.Star Davao said, "It is the second straight win for Davao City in 10 years. Tagum City used to dominate the event for quite sometime."

Meanwhile, Davao City beat Tagum City in men's team finals to keep the crown.

The host city is all set to defend its national Prisaa title in Dagupan City next month.

UM main's Terrence Estrope, Ronard Joven and Armando Palac with Mark Anthony Alcoseba of the Rizal Memorial Colleges bannered the Davao City men's team.

Davao City women's team will also advance in the national finals with key netters Patricia Adaza of the Ateneo de Davao University and Jessicah Haro of UM main.
