Year-end night kayak
SIX young people, mostly students, successfully made the year-ending night kayaking last December 26 from the Sta. Ana Wharf in Davao City to the Punta del Sol Beach Resort at the Island Garden City of Samal.
Medical supplier Leo Ricardo "Abu" Alejandro, 26, a former paintball shooter, who brought along his two siblings Sarah Anne, 17, and Priscilla Abigail, 15, led the group.
Also with them were Irma Thaesler and Eric Jun Merojada, both 23 years old and students. Kayak guide Randy Pascua of Wind and Wave Davao accompanied them.
The group was able to successfully cross the channel of Davao Gulf by paddling a total of 3.8 nautical miles or 6.1 kilometers. They started paddling their single and tandem kayaks at past 5 p.m. and safely arrived the resort after almost two hours.
The regular monthly night kayak event being organized by the Wind and Wave Davao was held earlier already.
But the group of Alejandro had requested for a special night kayaking.
"We can't wait na for January for we really want to experience it already the excitement and challenge," said Abu Alejandro. They spent the night at the resort after taking their dinner.
The following early morning, the group woke up early to prepare for their trip back to Davao also by kayak. But due to the very strong current, they were not allowed to push through by their guide.
"Safety first is our main priority. We don't want to take the risk. Malakas talaga ang current at tatangayin kami at delikado," said Pascua.
Alejandro's group was brought back to Davao aboard Wind and Wave Davao's boat.
"No regrets. Okay lang, our main objective naman talaga was the night kayaking," Alejandro said.
"We can try it next time again, it's really exciting and very challenging," he said.
The initial monthly night kayaking for 2006 is set on January 14 and 15.
