Perez, Corteza top list By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
DIVER Sheila Mae Perez and cue artist Lee Vann Corteza will be elevated to the Hall of Fame in the 2006 So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Annual Awards.
SKC awards organizer Victorio Sai said the two Davao City athletes, who performed well in the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, will be cited for the third time as top athletes.
But they will have to be elevated to the Hall of Fame this year to give chance to other athletes to win Athlete of the Year awards.
Sai, also president of the Davao City Sports Council, Inc., made the announcement Thursday during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.
"Perez and Corteza have really made all of us proud with their SEA Games feats. They've been very consistent. It is but proper to give them the highest form of recognition, that is, the Hall of Fame," the DCSCI chief said.
Sai added there will be few changes in this year's edition of the SKC awards.
"There will be separate categories for athletes of the year in the international and national levels, giving our local-based athletes who shone in national opens due recognition," he said.
The 20-year-old Perez, who hails from Sasa and whose family now resides at Tibungco relocation site, collected gold medals in three-meter springboard individual and synchronized events and in one-meter springboard individual.
Corteza, 25, of Green Meadows, Mintal, took the 9-ball doubles gold and a silver in 8-ball singles.
Sai said all SEA Games medalists will receive awards including top athletes in the coming BIMP-Eaga Games.
