Mayor wants improved madrasah program in city By Barbara Carla R. Quiero
CITY Hall is tasked to embark on an improved madrasah program for Muslim children following the inauguration of the Madrasah Office last month.
"The mayor made a formal statement that he wants a more comprehensive Madrasah program," said Davao City Human Resource Management Office head Marcelino P. Escalada Tuesday.
Escalada said the madrasah program has been introduced to the city's Muslim communities 13 years ago, and yet it was only last month when it finally had a formal office beside the City hall.
He said the challenge posted to them after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte made the declaration is to identify places where they could open and expand the Madrasah centers.
Escalada added that they have requested the Local School Board to increase the annual budget of the madrasah program from P8 million to P10 million to finance the plan to make it more comprehensive, which was granted.
He said they are planning to add seven more Madrasah centers in the city and 15 more Ustadzes or Arabic teachers.
"The Muslim communities need more of these," said Escalada.
Other than the additional Madrasah centers and Arabic teachers, he said, Duterte is also looking into creating a Muslim Village where there would be a complete facility to answer the needs of the Muslim.
"This is to respond to the requirements of our Muslim brothers so that they will no longer consider themselves less privileged," Escalada said.
As of today, he said there are 43 Madrasah centers in the city with 123 Ustadzes.
