Court urged to junk doc's appeal for reinvestigation
By Joy G. Romares

THE special counsel of the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) urged the Regional Trial Court (RTC) to set aside the motion for reinvestigation filed by a lady doctor tagged in large-scale illegal recruitment two years ago.

Lawyer Vendrito M. Bangayan said that accused Dr. Maria Laarni Villanueva should be immediately arraigned since the motion for reinvestigation she filed lacks legal basis.

Bangayan said the accused was allegedly caught in the act of committing the crime when she and her two companions, Rosalina Rojo Lagazo and one Matilde Alquizar of Calinan, Davao City, were arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by the elements of the Calinan police led by Chief Inspector Joseph Sepulchre on June 1, 2005.

The complaint was filed in August by Flordelita Bulat-at, Evelyn Tejadillo, Riza Dabon, Lovelina Agbuhos, Grace Agbuhos, and one Mayolito Sasuman, all of Davao City.

In their joint-affidavit, the complainants said they were recruited by Villanueva sometime in 2004 and promised deployment to New Jersey as flower
picker and packer.

Villanueva, the complainants said, demanded money for the processing fee of their documents and for their medical examination she conducted in her private clinic in Calinan.

The complainants only learned that Villanueva and her companions were not authorized by the POEA to deploy workers abroad when they sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation after Villanueva failed to deploy them abroad.
