Cases filed v. highway robber
THE Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Digos City filed cases of highway robbery and illegal possession of firearms against a Davao City resident Friday.
The cases were filed against Jerry Arendain, 26, of Cabantian -- the prime suspect in the robbery of the Weena passenger bus along national highway in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur.
The two cases were read to the suspect during a court hearing at the sala of Judge Artemio Tajon.
Arthuro Cervantes drove the bus with Arman Betardos of Barangay Cabligan, Matanao, Davao del Sur serving at his conductor.
It had just stopped at Digos and was heading to Davao City when Arendain declared a hold-up at about 10 a.m. Thursday.
The suspect pointed a gun towards the conductor and got some P3,000 of collected cash. He then alighted from the bus and headed towards a residential area.
But a passenger victim who is a member of the General Santos-based Task Force Tugis along with staff of the Sta. Cruz police precinct led by Police Senior Inspector Gabriel Luceñara hunted him down at one of the houses in the area.
The suspect surrendered after a brief negotiation. The police recovered a .45 caliber pistol with six live bullets and the P3,000 cash robbed from the passengers.
The suspect claimed he planned the robbery so he can buy a grenade, which he intends to use against an unidentified enemy back home. He is in the custody of the Sta. Cruz Police Precinct. (GOT/NC)
