Davao Norte politics heating up early

WITH still a year and a half before the next elections, politicking in the province of Davao del Norte has already started.

Local papers in the province quoted Governor Gelacio Gementiza as declaring his support to Vice Governor Antonio Rafael del Rosario if ever the young del Rosario plans to seek the governor's post in 2007.

But another paper said Gementiza is still bent on seeking a re-election.

"There are only three options for those who want to replace the incumbents: First will be the total support of Arroyo. Second is light up huge candles until you forget to breath. Third is to wait for an election," Mantalaan quoted the governor as saying.

Gementiza is reportedly confident that the del Rosario and Floirendo political clan is not keen on pitting Antonio against him so that their political party would not break apart.

"They will not let Anthony run against me because Congressman Antonio R. Floirendo will not allow that. If they do that I will also field a line-up in District 2 that will run against Margie. This will mean the support of people will be divided and they will have to spend more," Gementiza said.

Likewise, politics in Compostela Valley is also starting early as provincial board member Arthur "Chongkee" Uy and Governor Jose Caballero are now locked in a word war over alleged anomaly in a bridge project.

Caballero is in his last term now and reportedly fielding either his daughter or his wife for the gubernatorial post.

Uy, meanwhile, is said to be interested also in the post. (BOT)
