Sugar Central eyes GenSan expansion
THE Davao Sugar Central Company Inc. (Dasuceco) is eyeing General Santos City as among its target areas for expansion in the coming years, said Pix Ibag, representative of Dasuceco.
Aside from General Santos, Dasuceco is also planning to put up sugar plantations in the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato.
Ibag said their planned expansion is in anticipation of the expected increase in market price of sugar in the next five to 10 years.
"Our company is joining other investors in the agriculture sector in doing its best to help boost the country's sugar industry," said Ibag.
He said industry players are encouraging farmers to venture into sugar cane cultivation to meet the expected rise in demand of sugar cane both locally and abroad in the coming years.
Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. welcomed the plan of Dasuceco to open up a sugar plantation in the city, saying it would further boost the city's farming sector.
Acharon revealed that the city agriculturist's office has already identified areas conducive to sugar cane growing.
Initial data from the city agriculturist's office showed that a one-hectare land planted to sugar cane with capitalization of P57,000 would yield a net income of about P30,000.
Some villages like Sinawal and Batomelong have started planting sugar cane, but the city agriculturist's office noted that the growers still needed the proper technology and know-how to increase their harvest.
Ibag vowed to share the technology to farmers once the plan to expand their sugar plantation is finalized.
