Davao 9 off to a hot start

THE Davao Region volleybelles drew first blood by whipping Bicol Region 25-13, 25-11, 25-11 at the start of the 2006 National Prisaa Games at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Culture Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan Monday.

Head coach Exequiel "Iking" Tomines, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao, said "Dolly Peñaflorida, Roxanne Mendoza and Caren Desierto lived up to expectations. They were the key players against the Bicolanas."

Tomines said they would clash against Cebu City Tuesday.

"Cebu is strong but we still stand a chance since we had complete preparations for the meet," Tomines added.

He earlier predicted a better finish in this year's national finals citing the rigid training his wards went through during the holiday break last December.

Beefing up the squad are Levy Canque, Annalyn Diaz, Shiela Traiga, Aiza Armancio, Genalyn Florida, Myka Ramos, Analou Ureta, Maricel Cabus and Janice Arnaiz. Dominador Valdez is assisting Tomines.

The 210-member Davao Region is also seeing action in athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, table tennis, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, baseball, softball, taekwondo and swimming in a bid to improve its runner-up finish in the Zamboanga championships last year. (MLSA)
