Revenue bureau urges public to demand receipts
BUREAU of Internal Revenue Assistant Commissioner Lucita Rodriguez said people's vigilance is needed to support the government tax program.
Rodriguez said the public could help by demanding official receipts or sales invoices for purchases made.
"Marahil, kung bawat mamimili ay hihingi ng resibo sa alinmang bibilhin nila, baka hindi na natin kailangan ang expanded value-added-tax na isinusulong ngayon ng gobyerno," Rodriguez said in a recently concluded expanded value added tax (VAT) Forum held at the Regency Hotel in Davao City.
Rodriguez, Representative Joey Salceda, and Philippine Information Agency director general Renato Velasco were in the city to speak during the forum attended by information officers of government agencies, non-government organizations, and media practitioners.
"Please ask for receipts for goods and services. Revenue corruption on the part of business establishment is a bigger problem than expenditure corruption. If only people pay taxes, if only businessmen pay correct taxes due for government, there will be no need for expanded VAT," she added.
The public, she said, could directly report to their office any businessman, lawyer or medical practitioner who refuses to issue official receipts.
"There is no substitute for public vigilance.
