Mayor orders evacuation of Diwalwal residents
By Ben O. Tesiorna

MONKAYO Mayor Manuel Brillantes Jr. has ordered the evacuation of some areas in the gold rush mountain of Diwalwal after authorities tagged it is as among the top landslide prone areas in Northern Mindanao region.

In an interview Tuesday, Brillantes said he already ordered the Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council to identify the specific areas in Diwalwal that are at the highest risk for a landslide.

"Leyte Mudslide". Post your comments on the incident here.

He said after the identification they would then forcibly evacuate residents in the identified areas to prevent loss of lives as what happened in Southern Leyte last week.

Brillantes said he is anticipating resistance from the thousands of Diwalwal miners.

For this reason, he relegated the implementation of the forced evacuation to the Army's 28th Infantry Battalion and the Philippine National Police stationed in Diwalwal.

Brillantes appealed to the residents to abide by the planned evacuation since the local government is just safeguarding their lives.

"Matagal na kasi naming plano yang evacuation na 'yan. Ngayong na identify na talaga ng Mines and Geosciences Bureau na high risk area ang Diwalwal kelangan na talaga nating mag-evacuate. Tutal hindi naman lahat ng Diwalwal apektado eh. May mga lugar lang na di talaga pwede tayuan ng bahay at baka nga gumuho," he said.

Sun.Star Davao failed to get the comment of Diwalwal barangay captain Franco Tito on the planned evacuation.
