Rebel leader, medic surrender: Army
A REBEL leader and his fiancée who heads the rebel group's medical team surrendered to the military last February 2, an official said.
Lieutenant Colonel Perfecto M. Rimando Jr., chief of the Army's 60th Infantry Battalion, made this statement in his report to Colonel Luini C. Mirar, chief of the 401st Infantry Brigade.
Mirar identified those who surrendered as Siso Antay, alias. Mario, team leader of Abe Primera, Sentro de Grabidad of the Front Committee 35 of the New People's Army (NPA) Southern Mindanao Regional Committee, and his fiancée Jackielyn Lapidas, alias Bea, medical team leader of the same NPA group.
He said the two voluntarily surrendered to government authorities following relentless military operations.
Mirar added the two wanted to return to the folds of the law and live normal lives after realizing that the promise of better life with the communist movement was not being fulfilled.
He said the two confessed that life in the underground movement is getting harder every day as they are constantly on the run and that more and more people are not welcoming them in their villages.
The local government and the military leadership of the province are optimistic that more communist rebels would give up their armed struggle and join the mainstream society.
Mirar appreciated the efforts of Kapalong Mayor Dominador Cruda and tribal leaders of the municipality to weed out the insurgency problem.
He also stressed that collaboration among the populace, local government units and agencies would be the best tool to uproot and eradicate the communist movement in the province. (BOT/With Peng Aliño)
