‘Palos’ at number 3 in Sportswriters Division

VILLAMOR Golf Club came through with 105 points to take a precarious one-point lead at the start Wednesday of the 59th Philippine Airlines (PAL) Men's Regular Sportswriters Division.

Manila Golf Club stayed one point behind at 104, while Rancho Palos Verdes is at third place with its 102. Alabang is occupying fourth place at 100 and Davao City Golf Club fifth at 97.

Gary Sales spearheaded Villamor's opening-day surge with 29 points at the scenic Apo Golf and Country Club. He was backed up by Jun Arceo (28), Dong Bobis (25), and Stanley Uy (23).

Defending champion Iligan, which won the crown last year in Bacolod City, had a dismal start with 79 points, or 26 points behind the leader.

Alfonso "Tibor" Marcelino paced Palos in scoring with 27. Other scorers for the team were Paul Larrabaster (26), Joe Marfori (25) and Eduardo Wee (24). Jessie Tan's 20 did not count.

Davao City Golf Club leaned on Enrico Gavino (28), Napoleon Manajero (25), Ludwig Ledesma (22), and Fabian Javier (22).

This year's major sponsors are Action Asia, Airbus, Boeing, GE Aviation, GMA7, Honda Cars Davao, INQ7.net, Joey 92.3, Royal Caribbean International, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., People Asia, Premier Win and Spirits, Rudy Project, UMBN and Uraya Land Development Corp.

ABS-CBN International, Fortune Tobacco and Radio Mindanao Network are the corporate sponsors, with 96.3 Wrock, Asia Brewery, Century Park Hotel, Honda Megamotors, SM City Davao and Tanduay Rhum as the other backers.
