Councilor hits telecom firms for promotional messages
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

DAVAO City Councilor Danilo C. Dayanghirang has filed a formal complaint before the National Telecommunications Commission against telecom firms for promotional messages.

Dayanghirang in his letter dated February 22 to Southern Mindanao National Telecommunications Commission Regional Director Josue De Villa Go complained over the alleged practices of Smart, Globe, and other cellular companies regarding unauthorized messages especially during unholy hours.

He said unauthorized text messages disturb the unit holder so much, particularly when the subscriber is sleeping or in an important meeting.

There are also promotions on ring tones, which are charged to the subscribers' account even if they are not requested.

Dayanghirang said he has received several text messages that his number won a cash prize during a raffle.

He said he was requested to call a certain cellphone number to claim the prize.

Dayanghirang said he tried calling, but the girl at the other side of the phone endorses him to another person.

"You can just imagine the disturbance that this people caused to the millions of subscribers," he added.

The councilor said many of his constituents also complained that cell loads are easily consumed.

Dayanghirang said that as a consumer and a public official, he would like to ask redress and clarification from the National Telecommunication Commission regarding the matter.

"We must remember that these are hard-earned money of the people and I hope that the opportunity to have this advance technology for easy access should not be used to make more money at the expense of the public," he said.

Dayanghirang said he is willing to hear the side of the telecom firms in the name of fairness and transparency.
