No need for another Edsa uprising: Bello
A DABAWENYO, who once headed an opposition group during the Marcos regime, said the Edsa People Power in 1986 would never happen again.
Silvestre Bello III said the Edsa 1986 revolution has restored democracy in our country and that there's no need for another one.
"It should not happen anymore. The opportunities for change and the democratic space and legal processes for reforms are in place," said Bello.
Bello is the former regional chair of "Justice for Aquino Justice for All" and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Mindanao in 1986.
He was then preparing for the arrival of Corazon Aquino in Davao City on February 23, 1986 when Edsa revolution started in Metro Manila.
"Our contacts then advised us to go underground na kasi Marcos already implemented Operation Mad Dog with an order for opposition leaders to be arrested," Bello recalled.
He added that Filipinos should now consider a different dimension for change other than a revolution in Edsa.
Bello said the people must realize that it was not Edsa revolution alone that ousted the dictatorial government of Ferdinand Marcos.
He said the "militant protest actions" in Mindanao contributed a lot to the nationwide show of sentiments against the Marcos government.
Back then, Bello's group conducted a weeklong protest action in Davao City that paralyzed the transport sector. (BOT)
