Protest rally against Arroyo's proclamation set Monday
A PROTEST rally against Presidential Proclamation 1017 will be held in Davao City Monday to criticize the declaration of a state of national emergency (Sone) by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and the media censorship implemented by the government.
The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) Southern Mindanao together with Women Against Repression (WAR), and Gabriela and its allied organizations will lead a picket rally near City Hall this morning.
The group said "Presidential Proclamation 1017 placing the nation under State of Emergency is indistinguishable from the darkest times of Philippine history that is Martial Law."
"The arrests, media censorship, and suppression of right to peaceful assembly may be just the prelude to more vicious attacks on our civil liberties," they said.
Media organizations meanwhile are one in condemning the raid on the Daily Tribune over the weekend as they called for the media "to take a stand".
"Recent developments, including the Friday night raid of the Daily Tribune newspaper office, the deployment of troops to "watch" over broadcast stations ABS-CBN and GMA7, and the threat implied against news organizations in the February 24 proclamation declaring a state of national emergency, all indicate that the Arroyo government is seeking to intimidate print and broadcast facilities and journalists, and scare them from covering and exposing all the angles of the present crisis. The question is: will we be cowed?" read the statement of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
The NUJP organized a gathering Sunday in Quezon City inviting journalists to "take a strong and united stand against all attempts by the Arroyo government to muzzle media all over again". (BOT)
