Fire bureau readies fire response plan
THE Bureau of Fire Protection in Southern Mindanao is formulating a fire contingency plan where each firefighting unit would be given special focused tasks and laid out protocols in case of fire incidents.
Bureau of Fire Protection Fire Safety Enforcement Branch Operations Chief Manuel Moratin said the plan is the initiative of the fire bureau's regional office as one of its new programs to be implemented for this year.
"We have a saying that prevention is better than cure. If we are ready for whatever incidents, if that comes, we could reduce the impact," Moratin said during the Kapihan sa PIA press conference Friday.
Moratin said the plan, if implemented, would organize every fire station into different divisions to do various tasks.
Among the tasks, he said, are firefighting to put out the fire, evacuating fire victims and their important belongings, clearing the traffic to make way for fire trucks, communicating to call the nearest fire station to be able to respond quickly to fire incidents, and mobilizing firefighters.
"Because in the establishment of fire brigade, every member have their respective function on what to do in case of fire," said Moratin.
Another purpose of the plan, he added, is to regularly check availability of needed firefighting equipment in fire stations.
"And the effectiveness of their firefighting equipment. If they have standby fire extinguisher, fire hydrant, fire hoses," Moratin said.
The month of March has long been celebrated as the Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines. It is also the month where a lot of fires occur because of the hot, windy weather. (BRQ)
