Aleonar rules cycling race
NATIONAL team mainstay March McQuinn Aleonar topped the grueling 180-kilometer 2006 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Araw ng Dabaw cycling race Sunday in Davao City.
The 20-year-old Aleonar led by more than two minutes against Ian Jason Sabater and Glen Yap, who finished second and third, respectively.
Sabater beat Yap at the finish line after both reached the corner of San Pedro-Claveria Streets.
"Frankly, I had a hard time, the heat, the cramps but I'm fortunate to finish the race in one piece," said Aleonar, who competed for the country in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games in Danao City.
The cramps, he said, took place on the way to Malalag, Davao del Sur but quickly recovered on the way back to Davao City.
His efforts won him P8,000 while Sabater brought home P6,000. Yap got P4,000.
Roger Henry Hayag ruled the beginner's division, good for P5,000, over first runner-up Danny Tapao and second runner-up Jan Israel Sunio.
Tapao won P3,000 and Sunio pocketed P2,000. Ernesto dela Peña showed he is still be best in the veteran master's class, besting the performance of Allan Salutillo and Carlofer Salonga.
Dela Peña bagged P5,000. Salutillo won P3,000 and Salonga P2,000.
The race, also backed by Solmux and Enervon C, was part of the month-long Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival with the support of the Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba ng Dabaw and Radio Mindanao Network, sanctioned by PhilCycling in coordination with the Davao Sports Council Inc.
