12th BIMP-Eaga meet in Davao City
MORE than 200 delegates and officials from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) were expected to Monday attend the 12th meeting scheduled in Davao City.
With a theme "Cooperate, Converge and Celebrate", the meeting coincides with the 14th anniversary of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco).
Board of directors of the BIMP-Eaga Business Council (BEBC) will meet at the Marco Polo Hotel while the BIMP-Eaga clusters on Natural Resources Development (NRD) and Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) will jointly meet at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
DTI 11 director Merly Cruz said the joint meeting of the two BIMP-Eaga clusters will discuss various concerns on how to improve the convergence of the member countries in order to be able to compete with the rest of the world.
Cruz said they have already identified four flagship projects that will be the meet of the discussion.
These are the halal industry, virgin coconut oil, palm oil and the seaweed industry.
Cruz said they are finding ways on how the four member countries could complement each other so that they could compete with the world market.
Like the case of the halal industry which is estimated to be worth $1 billion: Indonesia, a major corn producer, is affected with a bird flu virus while Philippines is bird flu-free but its poultry industry is affected by the high local corn prices.
Cruz said the two countries can complement each other with Indonesia giving us local fowl producers cheap corn while the Philippines in turn would supply them with bird flu-free halal chickens.
Aside from the meetings, there will also be an information and product exhibit at the NCCC Mall. A handover ceremony for the BEBC chairmanship is also scheduled. Malaysia will turn its post to the Philippines with Mindanao Business Council chair Romeo Serra as its new chair. (BOT)
