Army chief, defense exec in Davao Wednesday
ARMY chief Hermogenes Esperon and Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz are in town Wednesday to inaugurate the military's transient house inside the military camp in Panacan, Davao City.
Aside from the inauguration, Esperon is also slated to meet with Army officials in Southern Mindanao region and do rounds on various military camps.
Esperon recently confirmed that a military junta or a civilian transitional government would have been put in place had the "misguided" soldiers succeeded in their plan to oust the Arroyo administration last month.
Esperon's statement confirmed most of the stories the media have been publishing about the coup plots that caused President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to declare a state of national emergency.
Brigadier General Danilo Lim and Marine Colonel Ariel Querubin broached this proposal to the Armed Forces chief Generoso Senga, said Esperon.
Lim and Querubin, together with their troops, were reportedly ready to march along with political anti-Arroyo protesters and announce their withdrawal of support during the 20th anniversary rites of Edsa 1.
Esperon said two officers when they spoke to Senga on the eve of the alleged foiled coup made the proposal.
After meeting with Lim and Querubin, Esperon said, Senga called him and the other AFP service commanders for a meeting.
The two officers were later called to join the meeting.
He added that Lim and Querubin were pushing to the chief of staff their proposal to set up either a civilian transitional government or a military junta.
But Esperon declined to provide more details, saying these would be revealed later after he received instructions that matters had been cleared with the chief of staff.
Lim and Querubin were relieved of their command of the 1st Scout Ranger Regiment and the 1st Marine Brigade when the alleged coup was discovered in the early morning of February 24. (BOT)
