Finance chief lauds city efforts to hike revenues

FINANCE Secretary Gary Teves hailed the local government unit of Davao for its strong collaboration with the Bureau of Internal Revenue, Bureau of Customs, and other government agencies in increasing the revenue collections of the government.

Teves challenged government revenue generating agencies to strive harder to collect more taxes to fund bigger projects that would benefit the Filipino people.

In a dialogue held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel with BIR XI director Marcelinda Omila-Yap and Davao collector of Customs John Tan, Yap informed Teves of the unified efforts being undertaken by the BIR and the City Government of Davao to improve tax collection.

She attributed the good working relationship between the BIR and LGUs and the BIR's personnel as the major factor in achieving their target goal.

Yap also reported that for the first two months (January and February) alone, the BIR has exceeded its target goal by P43.6 million or five percent of the assigned target of P6.3 billion. Last year, its target goal was P4.7 billion or an increase of 34% over the previous year.

"Compared to last year's collection, we have exceeded by P213.4 million or 30.57% for the same period," she said.

Yap said the region is among the very few that was given a very high target goal and that the BIR office is doing its best to beat or exceed this year's revenue target.

On the other hand, Tan also reported that the bureau is pursing revenue enhancement measures to achieve its collection target for the year.

Earlier, the Bureau of Customs nationwide reported that it has surpassed its P12.083 billion January collection target to P12.38 billion despite low volume of imports.

The January 2006 BOC collections, which exceeded the target by P297 million, was also P1.8 billion higher than last year's January collection.

Teves expressed his gratitude to the BIR and BOC for their performance, hoping that this would be the template that would be followed for the rest of the year.

The finance chief was in Davao to grace the Mindanao Cooperative Summit spearheaded by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) headed by Director Rosalinda Villaseca.
