WB happy with fiscal reforms
THE World Bank is more concerned on the government's policies rather than the political processes, said World Bank Country Director Joachim Von Amsberg who co-chaired the 4th Mindanao Working Group (MWG) Meeting held Friday at the Grand Regal Hotel in Davao City.
Amsberg explained how international donors have appreciated the clear fiscal reforms implemented by the Arroyo administration.
"These fiscal reforms have provided good news to the projects and programs intended for Mindanao since donors are more interested to do more projects while these projects are also getting an improved response in terms of counterpart funding on the part of the local and National Government," he said.
He stressed that these reforms have been progressing and helping the country achieve confidence from the international community.
Despite political rifts, the WB assured the Philippines that the former is more concerned on the policies issued by the government and not so on the political situation the country experiences now.
"We are not here to support any government, but we are more focused if the government issues good policies conducive to bring social and economic development in the Philippines," Amsberg said.
Amsberg co-chairs the MWG, a venue to facilitate and coordinate foreign-assisted programs in the island region. It is composed of representatives from the Government of the Philippines and the Donors Group with the Medco chair and the World Bank country director.
The creation of the MWG paved the way for the publication of the Mindanao Investment Program, which contains the priority projects and programs in support of peace and development in Mindanao.
The MWG convened yesterday to gather updates on the peace process, in Mindanao, and the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga).
The group also presented an analysis of on-going ODA in Mindanao, assess the status of complementation of ODA projects and programs, and formulate recommendations towards this end.
