PTA will be a park: mayor

AFTER decades of contemplation, debate, and planning by Davao City officials as to what is the best option for the city-owned PTA grounds, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte finally decided to turn it into a park.

In his television program, "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Duterte said he had made up his mind to convert the PTA ground to a park similar to that of Central Park in New York.

"If we would have a green area right in the middle of the city that would be something," Duterte said.

The mayor said he is fed up with the long debates and planning by city officials regarding the best option for the property, which has yielded nothing.

"I decided on a cold night when I visited the area to make this a park. We will plant big trees in the area by the end of this year. And as far as I am concerned this decision is final," Duterte said.

Duterte said he would discuss the plan with some experts and some businessmen who might be able to help him transform the PTA ground from a downtrodden sports facility to a beautiful park.

The mayor said big trees could immediately be planted in the property through a process called "balling" where big trees from other areas would be transported and replanted in the PTA grounds.

Duterte said he would look for a budget on the project just as he appealed to the well-meaning Dabawenyos to give their share in realizing the park. (BOT)
