Search for child-friendly LGUs to resume this year

THE Search for the Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities will resume this year after a two-year break.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Social welfare Regional Director and Chairperson of the Regional Sub-Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) Mercedita Jabagat said the search was called off from 2004 to 2005 due to revisions made on evaluations tools and guidelines.

Referred to as the Presidential Awards for the Child-Friendly Municipality and City, it was launched in 1999 in support of the Child-Friendly Movement.

It was initiated by the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), the focal agency of the government on children's concern.

The award is in recognition of the vital role of the local government units in promoting children's rights to survival, development, protection and participation and child-friendly governance.

The Presidential Award generally aims to institutionalize a child-friendly environment and governance in promoting and protecting children.

CWC used to confer prizes only to national winners. But this time, regional winners will take away a Regional Child-Friendly Seal plus P50,000 cash while national winners will get a Child-Friendly Trophy and P300,000.

To level the playing field, different socio-economic status of LGUs is given consideration.

There will be three categories of winners: for the 1st to 3rd class municipalities and component cities; 4th to 6th class municipalities; and for highly urbanized city and independent chartered city. (Press release)
