Gov't exec to traders: Focus on product diversification

TRADE Secretary Peter B. Favila stressed the need to diversify products and improve packaging in order to create wider and more stable markets abroad.

Favila said during the Yearend Economic Briefing held recently in Davao City that for Philippine products to strengthen their market niche, local producers of various exportable goods must see to it that they could closely compete with other traders from all over the world.

He cited the translation of product labels to a number of foreign languages just for the local products to appear more enticing and appealing to export buyers.

"Presently, our products are almost the same. We have to be very competitive if we want to become more successful. One of the examples here is the improvement of our packaging. If one of the is to be sold for Germany, we have to see to that it is in German language and description. Our producers should now consider the importance of product-diversification and packaging-improvement," he said.

Favila said the regional offices of the Department of Trade and Industry throughout the country and abroad could help the producers in terms of market access, while the Department of Foreign Affairs could assist them in the language-translation.

Moreover, Favila said in producing new products, the traders must always think that Philippine commodities and goods are of high quality.
