Regional chessfest opens in N. Cotabato
THE 2006 Regional Chess Championship Non-Master Elimination for Region 11 and 12 unwraps Wednesday at the North Cotabato Capitol Building.
Players from Davao City, Tagum, Digos, General Santos, Cotabato and Panabo, among others, will try to outdo each other in the three-day competition.
The seven-round Swiss System format event stakes cash prizes for the top 10 woodpushers with the champion going home P7,000 richer.
The runner-up will get P5,000, P3,000 for third, P2,000 for fourth and P1,500 for fifth. The sixth to 10th placers will not go home empty-handed as they are assured of P1,000 each.
North Cotabato Governor Manny Piñol is presenting the tournament in coordination with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Region 11.
The top 10 will also gain semi-finals berths to the national qualifying for the World Chess Olympiad on April 6 to 9 at the Market Place in Mandaluyong City.
National, Fide, and international masters will raise 0the level of competition in the semis round. (MLSA)
