Troops raid temporary rebel camp in Paquibato
A TEAM of government troops Thursday raided a temporary camp of the New People's Army (NPA) in Paquibato district while the rebels were reportedly conducting a major meeting in time for their 37th founding anniversary.
Task Force Davao chief Eduado del Rosario said he was informed of the presence of NPA rebels in the area by 73rd Infantry Battalion chief, Lieutenant Colonel Rolando Bautista, just an hour after the initial encounter that happened in Sitio Gatonga, Barangay Tapak in the boundaries of Davao City and Bukidnon.
The encounter started around 12:30 p.m. between about 14 Army soldiers and an estimated 200 NPA rebels.
Del Rosario said that as early as Tuesday, the soldiers had already monitored the presence of a big number of suspected rebels in the area.
He said about 15 tents were erected by the rebels purposely for the plenary session.
On Wednesday, a team of soldiers started inching their way towards the rebel group that eventually resulted in the armed encounter Thursday. Del Rosario said reinforcement teams from the Philippine Army are already on their way even before the encounter happened.
Del Rosario said there is possibility that the infamous Kumander Parago is in the area. Fighting continued as of press time. (BOT)
