100 netters in Davao leg By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
OVER 100 netters will slug it out for prizes and Philta ranking points when the 2006 Head-Penn Junior Tennis circuit opens Saturday at the Ecoland Phase IV courts in Davao City.
Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) regional vice-president Juanito Cansino Jr. bared this during the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn Thursday.
"A total of 102 players confirmed to join the tournament as of today. It may increase before action begins on Saturday," Cansino said.
He said the must-see match between Jr. Davis Cup-bound Cebu City bet Francis Largo against Davao City's El Santo Santos will be among the main attraction of the meet.
"These two players are among the country's top three in the bracket. It would be a very good chance for Santos to avenge his loss to Largo in the Jr. Davis Cup eliminations set in Manila sometime in September last year," Cansino said.
Others seeing action are Manila's Amara Sotto and Mark Balse and Dumaguete's Macy Solon.
There would have been more Manila players coming but they opted to stay there to compete for the Tru-flex Tournament.
The Philta regional chief, however, said Manila players will compete in the Head Penn tour starting with the General Santos leg.
Other Davao bets are right on schedule with their training. Thus, they are up to the challenge to be posed by visiting players also coming from General Santos, Cotabato, Kidapawan, Tagum, Digos, Panabo, Cagayan de Oro and Compostela Valley, among others.
Prizes at stake are trophies, medals, tennis grips and string balls.
The Dynamic Sports Corporation, headed by Christopher Tang, is organizing the annual tennis circuit.
