Duck raising in wild bird areas banned
DEPARTMENT of Agriculture (DA) director for Southern Mindanao Roger Chio said the government has restricted the raising of ducks in wetlands frequented by migratory birds.
Duck raisers are urged to coordinate with agriculture technicians to preempt any situation that might occur especially on wetland areas in the region.
This move, he said, is to prevent the entry of the deadly bird flu virus in the country.
The Philippines is known to be a bird-flu free country and the government is doing all its effort to make the country bird-flu free.
The Bureau of Animal Industry central office also prohibited people from bringing migratory birds to the Philippines while special permits would be needed to transport ducks coming from areas frequented by migratory birds.
This is to prevent the possible infection of domestic ducks with avian influenza.
In Southern Mindanao region, DA personnel and technicians have been conducting regular inspections and coordination with local officials to ensure that these regulations are observed to prevent entry of the lethal strain of bird flu.
"The import of poultry from areas where bird flu has been detected has been banned while bird sanctuaries are closely monitored for any incidence of the disease," Chio said. (Press release)
