Correct population info urged
THERE is a need for a better and correct information drive on population management if we really want to reduce our population growth, said Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles.
"Correct information drive makes parents understand the need to limit their children and over time, may lead to lower population rates," he said.
He added, "This is a slow process but we need to educate the public, especially the urban poor who need government services. Population management has always been a contentious issue in our country as the Roman Catholic Church is against artificial birth control."
Nograles said the Philippine Constitution clearly delineates the roles of Church and State. While the State takes care of the physical well being of its people, the Church is responsible for the moral values and religious beliefs of its flock.
Presidential spokesman Secretary Ignacio Bunye earlier said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo respects the Church and the State on this matter.
Arroyo is open to discussions over issues concerning population management although it is not among the priorities of her administration.
"All sides of the population issues must be heard. The President is always open for discussion that will enlighten the people on issues of the growing population," he said. (PIA/Rpalacio)
