Davao's Banate ousts opponent By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
ATENEO de Davao University (ADDU) player Andre Banate ousted Edbergo Ado, 6-0, 6-2 in the opener of the 2006 Head Penn Junior Tennis Tournament first leg at the Ecoland Phase 4 courts Saturday.
With the win, Banate arranged an uphill battle against top-seed El Santo Santos of the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) in the next round of the boys 16-under event.
South Cotabato netter Earl Roldan whipped Francisco Lorenzo, Jr., 6-0, 6-2, to go up against Ernesto Pantua in the four-day meet sanctioned by the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta).
Unheralded John Rey Mamaba pulled off a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Nikolai Luz while M. Espiritu beat Jade Bagonoc, 6-2, 6-2.
Mamaba will next clash against No. 4 Andrei Dizon while Espiritu will collide with No. 3 Juan Carlo Pantua.
Fifth-seed Princeton Gerapusco of Cagayan de Oro City was yet to play John Jello in the first round as of posting.
Second-seed Francis Largo of Cebu City, who drew a bye, will see action in the second round of the competition organized by the Dynamic Sports Corporation and managed by Philta regional vice-president Juanito Cansino, Jr.
Matches in boys 12-under were still ongoing as of press time.
The netfest also features the 10-under unisex, girls 12-under, boys and girls 14-under and 18-under divisions.
Philta ranking points and Head Penn items will be up for grabs to the winners.
