70 firms offer 5T jobs

MORE than 70 companies joined the Tourism Job Fair held in Davao City Tuesday with at least 5,000 jobs readily available to jobseekers.

Department of Labor and Employment regional director for Southern Mindanao Maria Gloria Tango said the summer job fair is not only for domestic, but also for international jobs placement.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

"Unlike in Cebu and Manila, almost a dozen companies with placement for international employment are part of the three-day fair," she said.

The three-day job fair in the city ends Thursday.

The first Tourism Job Fair was also held in Cebu and Manila, offering some 15,000 jobs.

"Even this early I could say that the job fair is a success with the number of applicants lining up at during opening of the fair especially that it runs for more than a day," she said.

She said based on their experience, the opening day has lesser number of people and sometimes people upon verifying the qualification required of the job would not pursue their desire to apply.

Although she said the bulk of the applicants in the job fair are those within the Davao region.

Tango said there are applicants also coming from as far as Zamboanga, Cotabato, General Santos, Bukidnon and other parts of the Caraga region.

But she said their department's organized job fair has only 10 percent absorption rate, which she attributed to the mismatch between the job and that of the applicant's qualification.

In some cases, she said, some of the vacancies are not filled up.

Tango added that the ratio of vacancies is one to 20 applicants or even up to 100.

She said unemployment rate in region remains a single digit for the last three years.

Tango said in 2005, the region's unemployment rate was at six percent compared that of Caraga region, which was at 4.5 percent.

But she said despite the single digit rate maintained by the different regions in Mindanao, the island is still the highest in unemployment rate compared to Visayas and Luzon.

Tango said the January 2006 national figure of the rate of unemployment is pegged at seven percent.
