Denver shines in his own turf
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

TRUE to his promise, Davao's very own Denver Regencia made it as one of the "champions" during the well-attended Davao City leg of the Pinoy Pop Superstar Year 2 Nationwide Roadshows held Saturday night at Park C of SM City Davao.

It was his first victory amid an intense competition that already brought the seven grand contenders to the cities of Baguio, Cebu and Iloilo and Davao. The last leg will be held at SM North Edsa in Quezon City on Saturday.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Denver, who hails from Tagum City, was in his fighting mood that night -- showing off a remarkable performance that made every Dabawenyo proud.

His passionate rendition of "Hanggang Ngayon" with Aicelle Santos and Irra Jammal Cenina and "Some People" with Rosemarie Tan, had indeed impressed the panel of judges, composed of big names in the entertainment world -- musical director Floy Quintos, world-class composer Danny Tan and GMA assistant vice president for talk, variety and musical Darling de Jesus -- that they only have high praises for this young and talented Dabawenyo.

In an interview before the show, Denver was optimistic he will make it this time.

"I'm from this place. I don't want to fail my kababayans," he said. "I have to do everything. If you'll be there tonight, just watch me perform," Denver told this writer over lunch at Bistro Rosario on Saturday.

Danny Tan said last Saturday's show was the "greatest performance" of the seven grand contenders that the judges had a hard time choosing the roadshow champions.

After more than 30 minutes of deliberation, the judges finally came up with four roadshow champions, instead of the usual three.

"There was a tie. We really had a hart time," said Darling de Jesus, who announced the winners.

Also judged as roadshow champions in Davao City were equally- talented Aicelle, Rosemarie and Gerald Santos.

Aicelle and Gerald are consistent winners, making it as champions in Baguio, Cebu and Iloilo.

The other grand contenders in the country's most prestigious search for singing sensation are Harry Santos, Irra Jammal Cenina and Elise Estrada.

The seven grand contenders have to perform well in the nationwide road shows because 10 percent of their overall rating will be based on their performance in these regional shows.

The number of text votes will represent another 10% of the grand contenders' overall score while another 10 percent will be based on their performance in the Pinoy Pop Superstar Grand Contenders Album released by GMA Records.

The remaining 70 percent will be based on the powerful, par excellence performances of the grand finalists during the grand showdown slated at the Araneta Coliseum on May 6 -- where each grand contender has the chance to win a multi-million prize package that includes, among others, P1 million in cash, a house and lot, a brandnew car and P2.5 million management contract from GMA Network.
