Lumad boy shines for Sarangani
ALABEL, Sarangani Province -- Dario Lasib can do a "bicycle" kick 300 times. And 240 of that will go inside.
He can throw 100 roundhouses with 98 percent accuracy. And he is going to the Palarong Pambansa.
The lanky 15-year-old B'laan is one of the main boys of the sepak takraw team of Sarangani, which captured the crown in the 4th Cotabato Regional Athletic Association Meet (CRAA) held at Sarangani Sports Complex.
Lasib's team defeated General Santos City in the finals. Cotabato City placed third.
"Our efforts paid off," Lasib said in the vernacular as he led the team in accepting the championship trophy during awarding ceremonies Thursday.
The only boy in a brood of four, Lasib started playing sepak takraw when he was in grade six. His team made it to the Southern Mindanao Athletic Association (SMRAA) meet to which Sarangani formerly belonged.
"I played in the SMRAA but we did not make it to the Palaro," Lasib said.
He added that last year, he was selected to be part of CRAA's sepak takraw team but he was not able to participate in the Palarong Pambansa citing personal reasons. Sarangani only placed fourth last year.
When asked about how he practices his mean "bicycle" and roundhouse kicks, Lasib said that he saved some money to buy a takraw.
"I kick it everyday for my practice," he said. It cost him P400 for the ball.
Adriano Daligdig, Sarangani sepak takraw coach said that they experienced some problems but they proved that they can beat the odds and bring glory to Sarangani.
"He can really kick the takraw with power," Daligdig said of Lasib.
The pure blooded B'laan is planning to play sepak takraw until he finishes college. Lasib said that an acquaintance already mentioned a school in Digos City for a probable scholarship.
The son of a barangay kagawad in Poblacion Malungon, Lasib wants to be a nurse someday.
Lasib belongs to the B'laan tribe, one of the Indigenous Peoples that comprise a major portion of the population in Sarangani.
