Tax bureau exceeds target goal in Q1
WHILE the year 2006 is the "Year of the Dog" according to the Chinese calendar, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has been barking in a sense that they have embarked and expanded their tax information campaign throughout Davao City and the whole Revenue Region 19's jurisdiction.
With its successful information drive, the BIR Davao region has exceeded its target collection goal for the first quarter (January to March) of this year 2006.
BIR-Davao director Marcelinda Omila-Yap said Davao Region has surpassed its target goal by more than P54.7 million.
For the first quarter from January to March 2006, BIR-Davao region has collected taxes amounting to P1,361,741,694.94 while its target goal for the same period is P1,306,904,000 or an excess target of P54.7 million.
"Compared to the same period (January to March) of 2005, we have an estimated increase of P323-million or 31.10%," Omila-Yap said.
She expressed her gratitude to the successful media advocacy campaign launched by the BIR, the support of tri-media in Davao and the patronage of taxpaying public who understood the meaning of taxes and why we have to help government improve our tax collections because eventually the same taxes they paid would benefit them and the entire Filipino people.
Meanwhile, Revenue District Officer Jose Eric Furia, whose Davao City district has topped tax collections all over the region, has also put in place mechanisms
that he believes would help tremendously in the achievement of BIR's tax goal.
Both the BIR regional office and the RDOs have a personal approach campaign, a sort of heart-to-heart dialogue with the taxpaying public to let them fully understand why we need to help government in paying our taxes promptly and correctly.
Yap said there is a need to have a heart-to-heart campaign with the business communities, the taxpayers, corporations, the small and medium entrepreneurs and make them feel that they are partners in the government's effort to build the nation and that taxes are part of the contributions we need to help keep the economy growing.
Yap and Furia are strongly collaborating with each in undertaking massive tax campaign among the practicing professionals, such as lawyers the doctors including and government agencies and the local government units (LGUs).
"We should never forget to demand for official receipts every time we make a purchase. It is very important for consumers to ask for official receipts or sales invoices so that the BIR could monitor the correct taxes that business establishments are supposed to pay the government," Omila-Yap said.
