Militant leader dismisses protection offers
MILITANT leader Alvin Luque is not taking chances as he dismissed the offer of Task Force Davao chief Eduardo del Rosario to provide him security and protection if he decided to surrender.
In a text message to Sun.Star, Luque said he will never place his life "in the hands of the number one terrorist agent of the Arroyo regime in Southern Mindanao".
"How could I trust someone who has rabidly vilified and harassed Bayan and its leaders in the past and present. He (del Rosario) has portrayed and treated us like criminals, as terrorists when in fact he has committed some of the most vile human rights violations in the region. He can never sweet tongue me to accept his offer," Luque said.
The colonel earlier challenged Luque to make good of his promise to face the court. Del Rosario said if the militant leader is afraid that someone might assassinate him then Task Force Davao will provide security for him.
Luque and del Rosario has long been "enemies" way back when the colonel was still the commander of the Army's 73rd Infantry Battalion.
Del Rosario was the one who filed the rebellion charge against Luque and several others few years back. Luque was however able to post bail but was recently canceled by the new judge holding the said case.
Latest reports however revealed that the court deferred the serving of the warrant of arrest against Luque in response to a petition filed by Luque's counsels on Monday.
Luque's lawyers filed a very urgent omnibus motion for reconsideration with urgent motion to defer or recall issuance of warrant before Regional Trial Court Branch 14 Judge Marivic Daray.
For this, Judge Daray recalled her earlier decision and granted a 20-day maximum period for the prosecution panel to file its comments.
Karapatan said that over the last four years, Luque has been hounded with court charges imputing him as abetting and as a leader of the underground New People's Army (NPA).
Luque was a former student leader, a teacher at a religious-run college in Davao, a staff of a labor institution, before he became the secretary general of Bayan. (BOT)
