Bigger field seen in JVC badminton

A BIGGER turnout is expected when the JVC Badminton Championships Regional Circuit 2006 Davao City leg gets underway on May 1 to 5 at the Wheels N' More Badminton Courts.

Tournament director Leo Palumbarit said the Davao leg had the biggest turnout of entries last year with a record of 318.

"It is our target to surpass that number this year," Palumbarit said.

He said Manila, Cagayan de Oro and other Mindanao teams will arrive to pose a challenge to hometown bets.

"The five-day competition will feature the juniors 16 and under, elite, collegiate men's team and women's team invitational divisions. There will be no age limit for the elite category, anybody can join whether he or she may be a class A, B, C, D or E player," he said in Thursday's Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Tower Inn.

The juniors class will have the boys and girls singles and doubles and mixed doubles while the ladies category will have the men's and ladies singles, doubles and mixed events.

The champions in the junior and elite categories will advance to Manila for the JVC Open set sometime in June while the collegiate champions will compete in the JVC Interscholastic Championships in Manila in November.

Entry fee for single entry is P100 while an additional P50 is pegged for two to three events.

A tournament meeting and draw is set at 9 a.m. on May 1.

A similar competition was held in Cebu and Pampanga.

The Bacolod leg will follow the Davao edition on May 15 to 19. (MLSA)
